Liner Notes:

WHOLPHIN: What was the inspiration for this film? Did you bang your head as a child?

ELENA: Hah… maybe more as a teenager or during that mid-twenties crisis….

W: If you had to choose one, would you rather inform or entertain?

E: Information is entertaining to me.

W: Did you do anything weird and scary as a child?

E: I have a bad memory for that kinda stuff.. Probably blocked it out.

W: They say head-banging is normal in pre-verbal children. I don’t buy it for a second. You? Any conspiracy theories?

E: You mean like my belly is fat because I’m bloated? Well not quite but I guess “normal” is a bit irresponsible. I believe any form of anxiety or nervousness in children calls for attention/help.

W: Did you know the Berkeley Parents Network site has a whole section on head banging? How much research did you do?

E: I did a fair amount of research on web, but don’t think I went to the Berkeley site. Thanks!

W: Will you do any more of these types of films? Please?!!

E: Would love to.

Biography:

Elena Wen was born in Taiwan, raised in Costa Rica. She studied Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She was interested in drawing narratives, assembling them into hand-bound books, and producing those in limited editions. Her books are in private collections, and in the library collections of numerous institutions including San Francisco MOMA, Stanford University, Getty Research Institute, 601 Bisang Design Institute in Seoul Korea, and several other universities. In due time, her obsession with designing, sewing, matting, and gluing paper was replaced by a new intrigue and passion for animation. She went to the Masters Design and Technology department of Parsons to learn about computers, and has been working in motion production ever since. She has some complaints on the artistic integrity of the field at times, and so continues to fervently produce personal work. Still very much inspired by drawing, her animations are largely illustration driven in both concept and execution. Her artwork has been featured in Stash DVD magazine, Smile Faucet DVD magazine, Billyburg Short Film Festival, Meat Market online magazine, Lumen Eclipse online gallery, Chelsea Art Museum, Flux Factory, Secret Project Robot, and now Wholphin.
